Quick answer: PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a DNA-derived ingredient, most often sourced from salmon, that became popular through Korean dermatology clinics. In skincare, PDRN is used to help skin look plumper, bouncier, more hydrated and more radiant. It suits dull, dry, tired-looking and mature skin, and pairs well with retinol, peptides and hydrating ingredients. Because it is salmon-derived, PDRN skincare is not vegan.

What is PDRN?

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It is a mix of DNA fragments purified from natural sources, most commonly salmon. On an ingredient list (INCI), PDRN usually appears as Sodium DNA.

PDRN first became well known in Korea through in-clinic skin treatments. Over the past few years it has moved into everyday skincare, where it now shows up in serums, creams, ampoules and masks, often under the name "salmon PDRN" or "salmon DNA".

Why salmon PDRN?

Salmon is the most widely used source of PDRN in skincare. Salmon-derived DNA can be purified to a high level, which is why many formulas highlight both the source (salmon) and the purity of the PDRN raw material.

What does PDRN do for skin?

In cosmetic skincare, PDRN is used to:

  • Help skin look plumper and bouncier
  • Support the look of firmness and elasticity
  • Boost hydration and a healthy, glass-skin glow
  • Help skin look and feel comfortable and refreshed, including in at-home routines after professional treatments

PDRN works best alongside supporting ingredients such as niacinamide, adenosine, hyaluronic acid and peptides, and results build with consistent daily use.

Who should use PDRN?

  • Skin that looks dull, tired or less bouncy
  • Dry or dehydrated skin
  • Mature skin concerned with the look of fine lines and loss of firmness
  • Anyone who wants a clinic-inspired step in a simple at-home routine

How to use PDRN in your skincare routine

  1. Cleanse, then use toner.
  2. Apply your PDRN serum and pat until absorbed.
  3. Moisturize. At night, you can apply retinol after your PDRN serum.
  4. Use SPF every morning.

Pairing tips: PDRN works well with retinol, peptides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. If you use strong exfoliants (AHA or BHA), use them on different nights from retinol.

After professional treatments (such as microneedling): always follow your practitioner's aftercare advice, and only start skincare once they confirm your skin is ready.

Is PDRN vegan? Is it safe for sensitive skin?

PDRN from salmon is not vegan. Most PDRN serums are lightweight and suitable for sensitive skin, but as with any new product, patch test first. If you have a fish allergy, check with your doctor before using salmon-derived ingredients.
